THE ANATOMY OF THE FRONTOTEMPORAL BRANCHES OF THE FACIAL NERVE AND THE LAYERS OF THE SCALP AND FACE AND THE BUCCAL FAT PAD

Abstract
The accurate anatomy of the frontotemporal branch of the facial nerve and the relationship between facial layers is controversial and until now, not totally established.
In twenty sides of ten fresh cadavers and heads, the courses, depth and numbers (especially at the level of the zygomatic arch) and -relationship between facial layer of the temporofacial regions of the facial nerve have been studied.
There are three fascial layers in the temporal region : superficial temporal fascia, innominate fascia, deep temporal fascia. The superficial temporal fascial is a continuation of the galea which covers the vertex in the temporal region and continued to the superficial musculoaponeurotic system in the face. It can be separated into two layers (superficial and deep alyers) and is distinct in lower portion of the temporal region. The frontotemporal banch of the facial nerve lies within the superficial temporal fascia just deep to the superficial temporal artery. At the zygomatic arch level, the deep layer of the superficial temporal fascia is completely separated from the superficial layer of the superficial temporal fascia which is passing superficially through the subcutaneous tissue. The deep layer of the superficial temporal fascia is attached to the innominate fascia(condensation of the loose areolar tissue) at zygomatic arch level. When the deep layer of the superficial temporal fascia passes the zygomatic arch, it is loosely attached to the periosteum of the zygomatic and goes down to the face as the deep layer of the SMAS. The deep temporal fascia which covering the temporal muscle is separated from the muscles above the zygomatic
